An honest atlas of virtual worlds.
We catalogue metaverse and virtual-world platforms, label their status, and refresh weekly. The page you're reading explains how, by whom, and why we think the three-layer framework is the cleanest way to describe a confused category.
Editorial mission
"The metaverse" stopped meaning one thing some time around 2022. What survived split into three different categories, none of which the original word fits cleanly. We sort every platform we track into one of those three layers, and we say so plainly on each page.
- Layer I. Mainstream Living. Roblox, VRChat, Fortnite, Minecraft, Spatial, Zepeto, Cluster. Free, no crypto required, real concurrent users, currently growing.
- Layer II. Web3 Pivot. Decentraland, The Sandbox, Somnium Space, Hyperfy. The wallet-gated era is ending. Decentraland just launched on Epic Games Store and Google Play.
- Layer III. Spatial Rebrand. Meta Horizon Worlds, Microsoft Mesh. Category framing has been absorbed by hardware-led "spatial computing".
How we verify
Every entry shows a "Last verified" date. Every user-count claim shows its source and notes whether the number is vendor-reported or independently measured. We use Wikipedia for synthesised summaries, vendor investor relations and SEC filings for financials, and primary press releases for announcements.
When a number is widely cited but we can't trace it to a primary source, we say so. Our research notes carry a "Leads, not facts" section that lists what we have not yet verified.
Verification cadence
- Daily. Monitor for closures, pivots, or major policy changes.
- Weekly. Refresh up to three entries with newest data.
- Monthly. Full sweep across all entries and pillar pages.
- Quarterly. Re-rank the top-ten featured list.
The masthead at the top of every page shows the most recent sweep date. Right now: 06 June 2026.
What this site is not
It is not a forum. Not a wiki. Not a crypto exchange or wallet. Not a press release amplifier. Not a hype cheerleader, and not a hype obituary either. Just the score.
