Where the numbers come from.
Every figure on this site traces back to one of these sources. Primary first, then synthesised secondary, then vendor self-report (clearly labelled).
Primary
- Roblox Investor Relations — quarterly earnings and 10-K filings (SEC).
- Meta 10-K and 10-Q filings (SEC) — Reality Labs cumulative and annual operating losses.
- Epic Games newsroom — Fortnite player figures (announcements, State of Unreal).
- Mojang Studios / Microsoft — Minecraft sales totals.
- GlobeNewswire press release — Decentraland Epic Games Store and Google Play launch (31 March 2026).
Secondary (synthesised)
- Wikipedia — used as a synthesised tracker for fast-moving platform updates (Roblox, VRChat, Fortnite, Minecraft, Reality Labs, Apple Vision Pro, Decentraland, Horizon Worlds, Rec Room). Every claim has its own footnote chain; we follow back where possible.
- Wall Street Journal — Meta Horizon Worlds MAU under target (October 2022 reporting).
- TheNextWeb — Decentraland 2026 launch and 847K monthly web visitor figure.
- DappRadar — historical Decentraland and Sandbox engagement (methodology limitations noted).
- Steam Charts / SteamDB — VRChat concurrent users (PC only; standalone Quest users not counted).
Vendor self-report (labelled in entries)
- Spatial registered user counts.
- Zepeto registered user counts (Naver Z).
- Cluster monthly active users.
- The Sandbox registered totals.
We separate these because vendor self-reports often count registered accounts, not active users.
What we don't accept as a source
- Crypto-promotional blogs and aggregator sites without first-source attribution.
- "Top 10 metaverse platforms 2026" listicles that don't cite a date or a measurement method.
- Vendor pitch decks (used for direction only, never for verified counts).
Corrections
If you can show a primary source that contradicts something on this site, we'll publish the correction and credit you. The masthead date and the per-entry "Last verified" stamp update at the same time.
