Metaverse Platforms

The honest directory of virtual worlds.

HOW TO · 06 JUN 2026

How to access the metaverse in 2026 (step-by-step by device).

There is no single front door. There are five, one per device family. You probably already own the hardware you need.

Short answer: Pick a device you already own. On a phone, download Roblox, Fortnite, VRChat (mobile since October 2025), Spatial, or Zepeto. On a PC, the same plus VRChat desktop mode and Decentraland in a browser. On a Meta Quest, install VRChat or Meta Horizon Worlds. On Apple Vision Pro, install Spatial. None of this requires crypto, none of it requires payment up front, and you can usually be inside a virtual world in under five minutes.

Without a headset (browser only)

The lowest-friction path. Open Spatial in a browser. Create a free account. Pick a public world or create a private one. You will be inside in roughly two minutes. Decentraland also runs in a browser without a crypto wallet (look around, do not buy land).

On a phone (iOS or Android)

Install Roblox, Fortnite (returned to US App Store 20 May 2025), VRChat (mobile launched 24 October 2025), Spatial, Zepeto, or Cluster. All free, none require crypto. Sign up with email or platform login. Quickest entry to a mainstream metaverse on the smallest device.

On a PC

Any of the above, plus full VRChat desktop mode (no headset required), plus Decentraland in a browser. The PC versions usually have richer creator tools (Roblox Studio, Fortnite Creative, VRChat avatar import) than the mobile versions.

On a Meta Quest (2, 3, 3S, or Pro)

Open the Quest Store. Install VRChat for social VR, Rec Room (note: closed 1 June 2026, no longer available), Roblox (Meta Quest version added September 2023), or Meta Horizon Worlds. Voice chat with strangers is the defining Quest social experience; review the safety section of any platform before jumping in.

On an Apple Vision Pro

Install Spatial, which has been available since Vision Pro launch. Roblox added Vision Pro support in 2024. Microsoft Mesh runs through Teams. Apple itself uses the term "spatial computing" rather than "metaverse"; the platforms above still describe themselves with the metaverse vocabulary.

Without buying anything (and without crypto)

If your goal is "I just want to see what this is about for ten minutes", open Spatial in a browser tab. Free, no download, no wallet. If you want a social VR taste without a headset, use VRChat desktop mode.

Where to go from here

Our Platform Matcher filters by your device, your goal, your crypto preference, your age, and whether you want to consume or create. Five questions, one to three platforms, no accounts.

Common questions about accessing the metaverse

Do I need a VR headset?

No. Roblox, Fortnite, Minecraft, Spatial, Decentraland and Zepeto all run without VR. A headset is only required for full social VR (VRChat with body tracking) or Quest-native Horizon Worlds.

Is the metaverse free?

Most platforms are free with optional in-app purchases. Minecraft costs around 30 dollars one time. Decentraland and The Sandbox cost only if you buy land or NFT items.

Can I access the metaverse on my iPhone?

Yes. Roblox, Fortnite (returned to US App Store 20 May 2025), VRChat (mobile launched 24 October 2025), Spatial, Zepeto, Cluster, Meta Horizon Worlds and Decentraland (forthcoming) all have iOS access.

Can kids access the metaverse?

Depends on the platform. Roblox is 6+ with parental controls; Fortnite is 13+; VRChat is 13+ with filtering; Meta Horizon Worlds opened to 10+ in October 2024. See our /metaverse-safety-for-kids/ guide.

Do I need a crypto wallet?

No, not for the vast majority of platforms. Only Decentraland (for land) and The Sandbox (for land) require a wallet. Browser entry to Decentraland is wallet-free.
